Mexico City, January 22 (RHC)-- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that the Government of her nation will defend its independence, sovereignty and its compatriots in the face of the executive orders signed the day before by President Donald Trump, on the day of his inauguration.

“Regarding the decrees signed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, you must keep in mind that Mexico will always defend its sovereignty and independence as a maximum principle,” said Claudia Sheinbaum at the usual morning conference this Tuesday.

She also assured that the Government of Mexico “will always protect the countrymen who are in the United States and the Mexican nation acts within the framework of its Constitution and its laws.”

Regarding the decree Declaration of national emergency on the southern border of the United States signed by the American magnate last Monday, the Mexican president said that the regulation was already active during Donald Trump's first term, and had been eliminated by former President Biden during his presidency.

On the other hand, when referring to the Migrant Protection Protocols [MPP] also signed by Trump after his inauguration, Sheinbaum mentioned that "it is not a new measure," since the president installed it in his first presidential term in December 2018.

"This decree means that the United States does not allow people who apply for asylum in the U.S. to remain in its territory," said Sheinbaum.  However, “Mexico is a humanitarian government,” the president recalled, so “if there is a person who is at the border requesting asylum, we will never leave that person out in the open.  We will act in a humanitarian manner with migrants at the border.”

Immediately after, the president read the provisions of the decree "Restoring names that honor American greatness" and stressed that the American president will call the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America on its continental shelf,” which means that for Mexico and the world it will continue to maintain the common name by which it is known.

Regarding the decree "Designating cartels and other organizations as foreign terrorist organizations" and specially designated global terrorists, the head of the Mexican government assured that the regulations establish that “the United States has two weeks to study said legislation to call who they would call a terrorist organization.”

In this way, the Mexican head of State emphasized that the U.S. can act within its territory and according to its regulations.  While “Mexico will always defend its sovereignty and its independence and what it will seek will be coordination with the country, as Marco Rubio mentioned in his interview in the Senate.”

In this regard, she said: “That is what we are going to do.  We are going to seek coordination in matters of security with respect to the sovereignty of Mexico.  They can act within their territory, and in front of us, the defense of our country and the search for dialogue for cooperation.”
