Caracas, January 5 (RHC)-- As Venezuela's new, opposition-controlled Parliament was sworn in Tuesday, socialist lawmakers vowed to defend the people's gains over the past 15 years of the Bolivarian Revolution.

Addressing Tuesday's inaugural parliamentary assembly, Bolivarian deputy Hector Rodriguez accused right-wing politicians of only trying to oust President Nicolás Maduro. “Their sole aim is to get to Miraflores Palace, while the United Socialist Party of Venezuela stays true to defending the people.”

The socialist lawmaker reminded the assembly of the right-wing's role in the past in promoting neo-liberalism and their betrayal of workers in the 1990s.

Meanwhile, National Bolivarian Police and Caracas police were deployed to maintain order around the National Assembly, as well as at several subway stations and the Bolivar Plaza -- one of the mobilizing points of the various marches being held Tuesday.
