Havana, April 27 (RHC)-- The President of the Cuban Movement for Peace and the Sovereignty of the Peoples, Silvio Platero said in Havana that the U.S. Naval Base in Guantánamo, Cuba, is the only one of its kind in the world, kept by a foreign power against the expressed will of both the government and people of the land on which it is located.

In statements to the press, Platero said the undesirable U.S. military presence in Cuba is precisely the reason why the Caribbean state was chosen to host the International Seminars for Peace and the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases, the 5th edition of which will take place from May 4th through the 6th in the eastern province of Guantánamo.

So far, over 200 delegates from 25 countries are scheduled to attend the event, which aims to unite forces in the struggle to eliminate military bases worldwide, he noted.

Platero went on to say that in addition to foreign military bases and their negative impact, debates will focus on other important issues, such as nuclear disarmament and calls to end the interventionist policies of global powers.

The president of the Cuban movement for peace warned of the danger posed by the increasing number of military bases worldwide. He noted that out of the over 1,000 that exist today, 850 are U.S. military bases, distributed on the five continents.

He said that the event's program includes a tribute to the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro, at the Santa Ifigenia Cemetery.
