Havana, December 6 (RHC)—Cuba has rejected the unilateral decision by US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel´s capital.

A statement by the Island´s Foreign Relations Ministry expressed concern and rejection of the decision announced Wednesday by Trump and asserted that it entailed a grave and flagrant violation of the UN Charter and pertinent UN Resolutions.

The text added that the United States Government´s intention to modify the historic status of Jerusalem violates the legitimate interests of the Palestinian people and of Arab and Islamic nations, and that it will have serious consequences for stability and security in the Middle East, will further increase tensions in the region and will thwart any effort aimed at the resumption of peace talks between Israelis and Palestinians.

Through the declaration, Cuba called on the Security Council to fulfill the responsibility given to it by the UN Charter for the maintenance of international peace and security, and to demand Israel to immediately put an end to the occupation of the Palestinian territories and of its aggressive policies and colonizing practices.

In closing, the statement said that Cuba will continue to support a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on a two-State solution that allows the Palestinians the right to self-determination and to have an independent and sovereign state, with the pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital.
