Havana, May 3 (RHC)-- The progress experienced by Cuba over the last five years in the field of human rights will be submitted by the island to the UN Universal Periodic Review mechanism on May 16.

The mechanism is sponsored by the Geneva-based Human Rights Council, and it requires of each member state the submission of a report on their human rights performance.

Prensa Latina news agency reports that since the establishment of the mechanism, Cuba has presented reports in February 2009 and in May 2013.

The document, to be presented by Cuba's Foreign Ministry, covers the progress in the enjoyment of human rights and access to health care, education, culture, food and information and communications technologies.

The report includes the island’s commitment to the fight against discrimination, the promotion of gender equality, and the care of children, the elderly and people with disabilities.

It also collects details about Cuba´s assistance to other countries of the world, in their quest to preserve the right to life and human well-being.

The examination will also allow the island to once again denounce the impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for over 55 years on the human rights of the Cuban people.
