Havana, November 23 (RHC)-- The first group of over 200 Cuban health professionals who recently ended their participation in Brazil's More Doctors program, arrived in Havana this morning. The contingent was received at the Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
Over 8,000 doctors are being recalled after the Cuban government withdrew from the More Doctors program. The decision comes after Brazilian President elect Jair Bolsonaro demanded changes to the contracts of Cuban health professionals and questioned their training.
Upon their arrival in Havana, the doctors noted that although their departure sadly leaves around 30 million Brazilians without health care assistance, they will never accept threats or allow their humanism and professionalism to be questioned.
Meanwhile, Diaz-Canel praised the work of the country's doctors who have treated over 113 million Brazilians in some of the most remote and under-served communities over the last five years.
The Cuban president also stated that they are returning with honor and dignity and have shown that a better world is possible.
