Miami, April 19 (RHC)-- Cuban-Americans favorable to the normalization of relations between Cuba and the United States have condemned the new measures announced by the administration of Donald Trump against the island, including the implementation of Title III of the Helms-Burton Law.

In a statement issued Thursday, members of the organization Cuban+Americans for Engagement, CAFE, criticized the new restrictions to be implemented against Cuba and the position of Trump’s National Security Advisor, John Bolton, expressed earlier this week in Miami, Florida.

Such measures are "designed to affect the destiny, sovereignty and stability of the Cuban nation," said the group, who argued that Bolton’s tone and language was more typical of the Cold War era than of a politician of the XXI century.

The statement continued: ¨CAFE condemns the implementation of these regulations aimed at causing more hardship to the Cuban family.¨

Once again, the text added, the Trump administration chooses to be on the wrong side of history, going against the grain of most governments in the world by destroying the legacy of former President Barack Obama, from 2009-2017, who promoted a policy of diplomacy and rapprochement.

According to the members of the organization, Trump has chosen to "perpetuate the illegitimacy of interventionist and disrespectful positions towards the sovereignty and the right to self-determination of neighboring countries."

With that attitude, they estimated, the president turns a deaf ear to the demands of a Cuban-American and North American majority that supports the lifting of the embargo, the blockade, and the restoration of relations between Cuba and the United States.

At the same time, CAFE denounced the "obtuse and interfering nature" of the Helms-Burton Law and demanded its cancellation.

The reaction of the group is due to the fact that this Wednesday the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, announced that for the first time since the approval of this regulation in 1996, the total application of Title III will be enforced on May 2.

This section, which shows the extraterritorial nature of the blockade imposed by Washington against the Caribbean island almost 60 years ago, allows US nationals to sue persons and entities, even from third countries, who invest in Cuban territory on properties nationalized after the triumph of the Revolution, on January 1, 1959.

The law has been perceived as interference that threatens the sovereignty of countries involved in trade with Cuba, according to the members of CAFE, who declared that Helms-Burton constitutes a violation of international law.

They warned that this regulation, by penalizing extraterritorially other nations, reflects a position of antagonism that will not be received well by US partners such as Mexico and Canada, included in the North American trade agreement, or by European and Asian countries.
