Santiago de Cuba, June 4 (RHC)—Construction efforts are underway for the completion of a museum in Santiago de Cuba that will be devoted to the “Jose Marti” 1st Front, founded by the leader of the Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz after the landing of the Granma Yacht on December 2, 1956.

The front is the only guerrilla group of the Rebel Army that lacks such an institution. The new museum will be housed in the building of Santiago de Cuba´s old City Hall, located in front of Cespedes Park. From one of its balconies, Fidel Castro announced to Cuba and to the world on January 1, 1959, the victory of the Rebel Army over the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.

The museum will have 12 permanent and one transitory halls, and they will showcase historical objects, ranging from weapons, uniforms and other equipment of the guerrillas, personal items of fighters, and little-known photos.

The director of the new institution, Maylín Santos Suárez, told Granma newspaper that it will be characterized by the balance between the traditional and the use of new technology commonly used in museums around the world, displaying interactive screens, smart tables and there will be sounds, colors and smells associated with the natural scenery of the Sierra Maestra mountains.

The museum building will not fail to fulfill some of its traditional activities: it will keep the city´s mayor’s office with its hall of flags for the special reception of personalities, and it will continue to host the solemn ceremony every New Year Eve, with the hoisting of the national flag.

While the work on the museum continues, its surrounding buildings and the Céspedes Park will undergo maintenance.
