Havana, November 9 (RHC)-- The Cuban Medical Brigade is assisting Guatemalan victims of Hurricane Eta; as it did in 2018, when the Fuego volcano erupted, and in 1998 with Hurricane Mitch.

Doctor Ernesto Jiménez, in charge of the BMC, told Prensa Latina News Agency that the Cuban medical personnel located in the most affected areas by the storm, joined from the very beginning the assistance to the victims in the shelters and hospitals where they work daily.

Jiménez mentioned the brigades from Cobán, in the department of Alta Verapaz; and from Izabal, two of the 10 most affected, together with Huehuetenango, Petén, Chiquimula, Santa Rosa, El Progreso, Jutiapa, Quiché and Zacapa, all declared in a State of Public Calamity.

"Our aid workers have been present in most of these places for 22 years, which is why they quickly joined the Guatemalan teams," he said.

Prensa Latina spoke via WhatsApp with the specialist in Hygiene and Epidemiology of the Izabal brigade, Amparo Acea, who specified that her 14 collaborators support this first phase of attention of evacuees in nine shelters in Puerto Barrios, up to now.

"They cover Entre Ríos, Puerto Barrios, Santo Tomás, one on the Río Dulce border and another in Cayuga," said Acea.
