South African President Cyril Ramaphosa addresses the nation on Covid-19. February 1, 2021.

Havana, February 2 (RHC)-- South African President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted the selfless and unwavering help of Cuba's government and people to his country, particularly in the current COVID-19 confrontation.

In a televised address to the nation, the president praised the solidarity shown by the small island nation with dozens of countries, which has sent more than 3,700 professionals worldwide to help in the fight against the pandemic.

In recognition of this effort, Ramaphosa revealed, the South African government cabinet agreed to nominate the Henry Reeve International Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize.

In supporting his proposal, the South African leader noted the numerous consultations and treatments carried out by the Cuban Medical Brigade in Africa. Groups of health personnel continue to be active in many countries, including his country.

South Africa welcomed more than 200 professionals in April 2020 to join the front line in the face of COVID-19.

On its Facebook page, The Cuban Medical Brigade in South Africa appreciated the gesture.

“Thank you, President, we are here, and we will be helping the rest of the countries as our eternal President Fidel Castro Ruz taught us. We are Cuba.” They wrote.
