Havana, April 2 (RHC) -- The European Union (EU) has agreed to mediate in Cuba-U.S. relations upon a request made by the Group of Friendship and Solidarity with the People of Cuba in the European Parliament.

The President of the Friendship Group, Javier Moreno Sanchez, tweeted that the request to mediate before the U.S. government to remove Cuba from the unilateral list of countries that encourage terrorism had been replied positively by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

In a letter posted on Twitter by Moreno Sanchez, Borrell acknowledges Cuba's role in Colombia's Peace Process and states that "in our contacts with the new U.S. administration, we will address this issue and call on the U.S. to lift this designation.

Ana Mari Machado, deputy president of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power, tweeted that the assembly appreciated the Parliamentary Group's request and Borrell's favorable reply.

"Cuba does not sponsor nor promote terrorism. We support peace, solidarity, and collaboration between peoples," she added.

The United States first designated Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism in 1982. It was removed from the list in 2015 under the administration of then U.S. President Barack Obama.

However, a few days before the end of the Donald Trump administration,  on January 11, 2020, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the United States had restored Cuba to the list.

In early March, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the United States is committed to reviewing the Trump administration's designation. But she also said, "a Cuba policy shift is not currently among President (Joe) Biden's top priorities."
