Ambassador highlights friendship between Nicaragua and Cuba
Havana, April 17 (RHC) - Cuban ambassador to Nicaragua Jorge Mayo highlighted in Managua the friendship between Cuba and Nicaragua, friendship that is celebrated on April 17.
In an interview with Radio 580, he pointed out that the brotherhood and solidarity between the two peoples should not be limited to one day, since it began from the very beginning of the Cuban Revolution in January 1959.
He recalled the figure of the Nicaraguan pilot, Carlos Ulloa, who fell fighting in defense of the Cuban Revolution in Playa Girón on April 17, 1961, when the island was invaded by mercenaries at the service of the United States Government.
“Carlos Ulloa symbolizes a brotherhood and a bond between our peoples that transcends this date. There are 62 years of brotherhood, cooperation, exchange and mutual solidarity”, said the diplomat.
Mayo mentioned the actions by the United States Government to destroy the Revolution since its first years - among them terrorist acts and kidnappings-, of which the invasion of Playa Girón was the largest at that time. In this sense, he recalled that said military operation was devised, organized and financed by Washington.
He highlighted the figure of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, at the head of the troops in Girón who achieved victory in less than 72 hours, since the enemies "did not conceive, under any circumstances, the organization of the people and the revolutionary militias".
He stressed that the invasion of Playa Girón was not the only one faced by the Caribbean nation, taking into account unending acts of terrorism throughout more than 60 years of the Revolution. In this sense, he mentioned the introduction of dengue hemorrhagic fever in the country in the 1980s, as well as the acts of sabotage against tourist facilities in the 1990s, among others.
Referring to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington on Havana for more than six decades, the ambassador reaffirmed that it is the most reliable example of US aggression against Cuba. (Source: Prensa Latina)
