Colombian solidarity group repudiates EP position against Cuba

Havana, July 17 (RHC) The Colombian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba this Monday rejected the statement issued by the European Parliament against the people and government of the island.

The Movement points out that the document where the EP condemns alleged systematic human rights abuses in Cuba and proposes to impose sanctions on the Cuban people, government and president Miguel Díaz-Canel, "is a clear violation of the fundamental principle of free self-determination of the peoples and the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of a country".

The Colombian Movement describes as "unacceptable that an external body intends to judge and sanction a sovereign nation without solid and objective grounds to support its claims."

The solidarity group recalled that Cuba unfairly faced the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States more than half a century ago, as well as the inclusion in the list of countries that sponsor terrorism. They stressed that these injustices seriously affect the development of the country and hinder the full enjoyment of human rights by its population.

They called on the Colombian government to categorically reject the EP declaration against a member country of the Latin American and Caribbean Community in the framework of the EU-CELAC summit that is taking place in Brussels.

In this sense, the group highlighted the important help of Cuba to the search for peace in Colombia, recalled what was expressed by President Gustavo Petro at the closing of the third cycle of the Roundtable for Peace Dialogues with the National Liberation Army in Havana, and the Colombia will assume the pro tempore presidency of Celac in 2025.

The Colombian Movement of Solidarity with Cuba stressed that its members will continue working tirelessly to strengthen the ties of brotherhood between Cuba and Colombia and defend autonomy and solidarity as fundamental values before the Supreme Court of Justice. (Source: PL)
