President of the Frente Amplio (FA), Fernando Pereira

Montevideo, Jul 27 (RHC) The president of the Frente Amplio (FA), Fernando Pereira, described as indestructible the existing ties between the peoples of Uruguay and Cuba, during the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks, held at the El Galpón theater, in the center of this capital.

Hundreds of people gathered to commemorate the Day of National Rebellion, in the act called by the Uruguayan Anti-imperialist Committee of Solidarity with Cuba and the Peoples of the World.

From the podium, the leader of the Front of the Americas demanded respect for the self-determination of Cuba and the end of the blockade imposed by the United States, which he described as inhumane.

Every day it costs 15 million dollars in losses to the Cuban people, Pereira stressed.

He denounced as unilateral and immoral the inclusion of the Caribbean Island in a list of countries promoting terrorism, a pretext by Washington to make life more difficult for the people of the largest of the Antilles.

Fernando Pereira evoked milestones in the historic bilateral relations, including the work of José Martí as Uruguayan consul in New York, and Cuba's hospitality to hundreds of exiles from the South American country, victims of the dictatorship.

He also saluted the work of the Cuban medical brigade that has accumulated more than 100 thousand ophthalmologic interventions in almost 16 years of service here.

Earlier, the Cuban ambassador, Zulan Popa, evoked the heroic deed led seven decades ago by Fidel Castro together with a group of young people "who offered their lives on the altar of the homeland".

The diplomat acknowledged Uruguay's encouragement to the resistance of its people. (Source:PL)
