IRIS Foundation of Cuba presented its objectives at COP28
Havana, Dec 4 (RHC) The IRIS Foundation, related to climate and the first of its kind in Cuba, presented its objectives at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change -COP28-, which is held in the United Arab Emirates.
Rudy Montero Mata, president of IRIS, referred to the progress and projections of the organization, created for the formulation of projects, as well as the search, acquisition and management of financing to contribute to national strategies against climate change.
The Cuban entity incorporated a series of roadmaps in alliances created with other foundations, and considers it important to advance in cooperation actions, as explained by Montero in the Cuban Pavilion at COP28.
According to Montero, in the first stage 16 projects were formulated in various lines, including climate risks, circular economy, social dimension and vulnerable communities.
He noted that currently, the IRIS foundation (acronym for research, resilience, innovation and sustainability) is focused on the identification of financial mechanisms and works with the Green Climate Fund and the Adaptation Fund.
It is presented as an executing entity for the Caribbean Biological Corridor initiative and has scientific potential from allied institutions to contribute to national efforts.
IRIS is also in charge of contributing to South-South cooperation efforts, as well as advancing integration issues and the agenda linked to disaster risk management and confronting climate change.
María Alejandra Navarrete, legal representative of the Mexican Foundation for the Ocean A.C., expressed the satisfaction of working for more than 20 years with Cuba in a binational initiative for marine protected areas, work on sargassum, protection of corals and mangroves.
In addition, she referred to conversations with the Cuban Academy of Sciences about the creation of a coral network.
For his part, Max Puig, executive vice president of the Dominican National Council for Climate Change and Clean Development Mechanism, referred to the long-standing collaboration between his country and Cuba on different issues, and expressed satisfaction with the progress and the willingness to strengthen closer ties and work programs.
