United Nations, September 24 (RHC)-- Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez demanded at the United Nations a political commitment from industrialized countries to give effective response to climate change and its threats against humanity.

Speaking at the UN Climate Summit on Tuesday, Rodriguez drew attention to unquestionable scientific evidence about the dangers posed on the planet, such as an increase of the sea level and global temperatures.

According to the Cuban foreign minister, the main causes of the current world scenario are the irrational and unsustainable models of production and consumption imposed by the capitalist economic system, which generates inequality and poverty.

Industrialized countries have an historic responsibility and have more resources, he said, and warned that climate change will worsen accumulated environmental problems, poverty and food insecurity.

The lack of effective action and the necessary international financing to eradicate these problems can be compared to the irrational military spending imposed on the world, which in 2012 reached 1 trillion 756 billion dollars, with the United States using 37 percent of that amount.

Bruno Rodriguez recalled that during the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro warned about the risk to humanity due to the fast and progressive damage caused to natural living conditions –- and called for urgent international action.
