Cuba and Ethiopia sign agreement for cooperation in the sugar sector

Havana, February 2 (RHC) The groups of the Ethiopian Sugar Industry and the Cuban Sugar Business (Azcuba) signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in research and development, production, technical assistance, among other spheres.

The general director of the Ethiopian Group, Wayo Roba, and his Cuban counterpart, Francisco René Martín, signed the agreement in a ceremony held the day before at the headquarters of the local company, as highlighted by the state television channel Fana Broadcasting Corporate.

As revealed by the press outlet, the agreement will facilitate a commitment between the two parties in the areas of capacity improvement, development of sugarcane varieties, biotechnology, technology transfer and trade within the sector.

Taking into account the activities that will be carried out to improve the productivity of grass crops in the African country, it also includes increasing the production capacities of sugar factories and improving competence in maintenance and operational management.

In his speech during the ceremony, Roba expressed his gratitude to Cuba for its willingness to share its knowledge in the sector and collaborate with his delegation.

For his part, Cuban ambassador in Addis Ababa Jorge Lefebre expressed the commitment to comply with all the planned responsibilities, ensuring the rapid implementation of the additional technical aspects described in the agreement.

The previous discussions and the signing of the memorandum of understanding respond to the meeting between the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, and the Cuban Vice President, Salvador Valdés Mesa, last November during which they explored strengthened cooperation in the medical sector, tourist services, education and the sugar industry.
