Havana, May 5 (RHC) -- Miguel Díaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, visited the Artemisa area of Mariel this Saturday, as part of his tours through all the municipalities of the country.
Accompanied by Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, he arrived at the “Orlando Santana Valdés” Teaching Polyclinic.
The president learned that the institution provides consultations of different specialties and has 24 beds in a hospitalization room, in addition, it serves 34,500 inhabitants of four popular councils of the municipality of Mariel.
As explained to Díaz-Canel, one of the center's main challenges is to work to reduce infant mortality today by 10.8.
In the first five months of 2024, there is one death and 100 fewer births compared to the previous year, the President was informed.
Remodeled four years ago, this place has the daily challenge of providing quality services in primary care, in the midst of an adverse context of tightening of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States.
Health is a sector that feels the effects of the blockade very strongly, said the head of state during his tour.
The President spoke with patients, doctors, nurses, technicians and service personnel.

The highest Cuban authorities also went to the “René Arcay” Cement Factory where they were updated on the initiatives being developed to solve the problems accumulated in the factory and that have already been generating a positive environment among the workers.
Another institution visited was the thermal power plant where Díaz-Canel inquired about the maintenance that has lasted 4 months and for which 35 megawatts of power must be recovered.
"This is one of the most important maintenance that the Electrical Union has undertaken," he said in this regard.
