Havana, January 13 (RHC-PL) -- The seismic activity in Cuba has been normal, despite the occurrence of several minor quakes in the magnitude interval of 3.0 to 3.2 on the Richter scale during the first days of the year, experts say.

Specialists with the National Center for Seismological Research (CENAIS), located in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba, told the daily that those movements are normal and not unprecedented.

During the first six days of January, Cuban seismologists registered the occurrence of three perceptible tremors -- north of Yaguajay (Sancti Spiritus), south of Maisi (Guantanamo) and west of the Santiago de Cuba Bay.

CENAIS researcher, scientist Tomas Chuy Rodriguez, stated that of 5,799 earth tremors registered by the national seismologic network in 2014, only 20 were perceptible.

This corresponds to the usual behavior, ranging from that number to 30 or more than 40 annually.

Through accords with the People's Republic of China, Cuba now has high-precision equipment, digital data processing capacity in real time and other programs that have contributed to the development of seismic hazard map of the country and collaboration research with other nations.
