Washington, June 3 (RHC)-- U.S. President Barack Obama on Tuesday signaled his intention to veto legislation that would restrict travel to Cuba.

The U.S. Congress is currently considering the transportation draft bill that would restrict flights and cruise ships from going to Cuba, travel the Obama administration has encouraged. A statement issued by the White House says U.S. President Barack Obama's senior advisors “would recommend that he veto the bill."

The White House said the proposal, introduced by anti-Cuba Senator Mario Díaz Balart, includes highly questionable provisions, among them significantly limiting travel by Americans to Cuba for educational, religious and other purposes.

Last December 17th, Washington and Havana announced the beginning of negotiations toward reestablishing bilateral diplomatic ties, after an over 50-year rupture.

Even though most Americans support President Obama's Cuba policy shift, U.S. anti-Cuba lawmakers, including Mario Díaz Balart and also Republican Marcos Rubio oppose any attempt toward U.S.-Cuba rapprochement.
