Miracle Mission in Paraguay Marks 10 Years

Asunción, July 15 (RHC) -- The Cuban medical collaboration program known as Miracle Mission has reached its 10th anniversary in Paraguay.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the head of 16 Cuban doctors in that South American country, Dr. Carlos Alberto Perea, explained that this mission was established in 2005, with the aim of providing free eye surgeries and treatment to people of low resources.

Since then, more than 260,000 people have been treated and some 25,000 cataract and pterygium surgeries were performed in the Eye Center in Paraguay, the doctor explained.

The Operation Miracle Mission is a project started on July 8, 2004 by the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

It has a network of eye centers and surgical units in more than 10 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Haiti, Guatemala, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Paraguay, Granada, Nicaragua and Uruguay.
