Havana, September 19 (RHC)-- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will implement a fresh water fish genetic-improvement program in Havana, as announced by FAO officials.

The program includes the training of specialists and the introduction of fish species, said FAO´s official for Latin America and the Caribbean, Carlos Pulgarin.

During a recent international aquiculture forum in Havana, the FAO representative said that the new program will begin implementation this year at a fish-cultivation station located in the Havana municipality of Cotorro.

The idea is to achieve more efficient fish through genetic improvement, and this program will take on between 20 and 50 researchers, fish-growers and specialists who are currently involved in fish-farming, particularly of the Tilapia species.
