Baghdad, October 23 (RHC)-- A bomb attack targeting Shia mourners in northern Iraqi has left at least three people dead and another 36 wounded.

The casualties came after an explosive-laden car exploded near a convoy of mourners commemorating the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein, the third Shia Imam, in the town of Tuz Khurma northern Iraq on Thursday.

Tuz Khurma Governor Shalal Abdul said the blast took place near a religious center in the town. Medical sources have predicted that the number of fatalities may rise further.

The Takfiri Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for Thursday’s attack. The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 717 Iraqis were killed and another 1,216 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in September alone.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh began its march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization Units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
