Havana, June 3 (RHC)-- The Cuban Foreign Ministry has come out in support of Venezuela's hard won diplomatic battle against an attempt by the Organization of American States, the OAS, to stage an intervention in Venezuela and grossly interfere in that nation's internal affairs.
In a statement released Thursday night, the Cuban Foreign Ministry blasted what it described as “the hysterical, awkward, and unethical manner” in which OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro attacked Venezuela, catering -- noted Cuba -- to “dark interests” at the service of “imperialism and the oligarchies.”
The Cuban statement reads: “Mr. Almagro attempted to apply the Inter-American Democratic Charter, in particular its Article 20, allegedly directed toward responding to severe breakdowns or alterations of constitutional order, which was not invoked at the time of the 2002 coup against President Hugo Chávez Frías.”
The Cuban statement further criticized the OAS general secretary for seeking to use “authority which he does not possess, without a mandate by member states, and with the sole support of elements of Venezuela's coup-plotting opposition and other reactionary forces of dubious reputation.”
The Cuban Foreign Ministry applauds the strong regional rejection of the OAS Secretary Generals' “indecent role.” and the clear sight of regional governments that advocated dialogue, respect among countries and peace.
It notes that the regional reaction to attempts to intervene in Venezuela show that Latin America has changed. The defeated OAS scheme proves, said Cuba, that the Organization of American States continues to be “an unreformable instrument of U.S. domination” over the nations of Latin America and the Caribbean.
The statement openly rejects the likelihood of Cuba ever re-joining the OAS. Quoting National Hero Jose Marti, it reads that “...the northern seas will blend with the southern seas, and a snake will be born from an eagle's egg” before Cuba returns to the Organization of American States.
The foreign ministry statement statement concludes by reiterating Cuba's unwavering support for and solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro, the country's civic-military union and the courageous Venezuelan people.
